From Selling Soap to Sharing a Skill for Life
For about five years, I handcrafted and sold natural soaps online across New Zealand. During that time, I received constant questions—especially from friends and locals—asking if I taught soapmaking too. That’s when I realised: I didn’t just want to make soap... I wanted to share the joy of making it.

One of my favourite sayings captures this perfectly:
“Sell someone a bar of soap, and they’ll stay clean for a while. Teach them to make soap, and they’ll have a skill for life.”

Soapmaking is a beautiful, empowering craft. Whether you’re whipping up a basic bar or creating something luxurious, it’s cost-effective, creative, and best of all—you know exactly what’s going on your skin.

These days, I only make soap when I’m developing recipes for my books or teaching live classes. Every batch is made with purpose—demonstrating natural ingredients, artistic techniques, and timeless methods. Handmade soaps contains glycerin, a natural humectant (retains water). Commercial soap makers often remove glycerin from their soaps, selling it to use in lotions and creams. Homemade soap is full of glycerin, leaving your skin feeling soft and moisturized.
